What is sciatica pain?
Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain refers to pain that runs along the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back down into the leg.
Sciatica is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve along its path.
Why do I have sciatica?
Sciatica occurs when part of the sciatic nerve or spinal roots are compressed, either by a herniated disk, lumbar osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, or spinal stenosis.
This causes inflammation of the sciatic nerve itself, pain, and often some weakness, numbness, or tingling in the affected leg.
The prevalence of sciatica increases in middle-aged people. The likelihood of experiencing sciatica increases in the fifties and then decreases.
The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body, starting at the nerve roots in the lower back and sacrum, which join together and become the sciatic nerve in the gluteal area.
In the gluteal area, the sciatic nerve passes under a muscle called the piriformis muscle, which can also compress the nerve; this problem is called piriformis syndrome and can simulate sciatica.
